The Birds In Our Homes – Keeping Our Feathered Friends Safe
Having birds in our homes can bring great joy and most types of birds can live a very long time. Some even outlive their owners, living to be 100 years old or older. In order for them to have a long healthy life span, it’s up to us to keep them safe.
It is important to remember that although accidents can and will most likely happen, most that effect our feathered friends can be avoided by knowing what may harm your bird and making changes to keep them out of harm’s way.
Just because your bird is in his or her cage, does not always mean they are safe. Some of the things we use on a daily basis may be very harmful for our birds and we may not realize we are endangering them. Scented candles and potpourri may be deadly for your bird. Never burn scented candles or keep anything of the sort in the same room as your bird.
Always be sure that anything you put into your bird’s cage is bird-friendly. Watch for loose strings, bent wires and sharp edges on anything that is in the cage. Any of these can cause great harm for your bird.
Smoking by you or anyone else in your home is very dangerous for your bird, just as it is for humans. It is actually even more deadly for the birds in our homes. Do not allow tobacco smoke around your birds.
If you have other pets in your home, do not allow them to be together unsupervised. Even if you believe your cat or your mild mannered dog will not harm your bird, instincts are always strong. Some animals may not be able to control this natural urge.
Never leave your bird unattended if you allow them to be outside the cage. Harmful things in your home such as poisonous plants, electrical wires and cleaning chemicals can be deadly for them.
Bird-proof your home just as you would for a baby. Keeping the birds in our home safe will insure that they will live a healthy, happy long life.
